The ocean has always played a significant role in my life. It is both peaceful and powerful, not to mention beautiful. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to enjoy the ocean here because the water is quite cold. Nevertheless, I love everything related to the ocean; I find learning about marine life fascinating. My favourite animals, such as turtles, whale sharks and stingrays, also live in the ocean. I think sharks and sharks are so beautiful but misunderstood, more specifically sharks because of all the movies made about them and stingrays are made out to be animals that only care about stinging you just because the word “sting” is in their name. Even just sitting on the beach and watching the waves gives me endless joy. Especially when you can see whales playing in the distance which isn’t rare here. I grew up around the ocean due to my family travelling a lot so perhaps that’s why I have so much love for it. I wish I got to swim in it more but it makes it all the more exciting when I swim again. It’s weird because I am super scared of the lake since it’s so murky and I’m always scared of something grabbing me from underneath yet I feel so safe in the ocean and am never nervous about a shark or anything else grabbing me.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a classic coming-of-age novel published in 1868. The story follows the lives of the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as they grow up in Civil War-era New England. The novel talks about themes of family, love, independence, sacrifice, and personal growth. The story begins with the March family living in modest circumstances after their father goes off to fight in the Civil War. Despite their financial struggles, the sisters share a deep bond and face life’s challenges together. Each sister navigates her personal ambitions, flaws, and relationships. Jo struggles with her desire for independence, Meg learns to balance family life with her aspirations, Amy pursues her artistic dreams, and Beth’s quiet strength influences everyone around her.
“Touched to the heart, Mrs. March could only stretch out her arms, as if to gather children and grandchildren to herself, and say, with face and voice full of motherly love, gratitude, and humility–‘Oh, my girls, however long you may live, I never can wish you a greater happiness than this!'” (p. 578)
It reflects her immense joy and fulfillment as a mother. The context of this moment highlights her dreams for her daughters’ happiness, love, and unity as a family. When Mrs. March stretches out her arms, it symbolizes her desire to embrace all her children and grandchildren both literally and emotionally. Her words express a heartfelt blessing, wishing them the same happiness she feels in that moment. The combination of “motherly love, gratitude, and humility” shows the blessings in her life and her selfless devotion to her family.
PW#7- The Eddie & Backdoor shootout
Over the break, I visited Hawaii. To start the trip off, we went to a big surf competition called “The Eddie”. This competition only happens if the waves are above 40 feet. The competition is to honour Eddie Aikau, who was a lifeguard and surfer. We had to climb a tree to watch this due to tens of thousands of people being there. This event is held at Waimea Bay, which is known for having massive waves. Landon McNamara ended up winning which was cool to watch. I got to see all of my favourite surfers except for Kelly Slater who backed out due to the waves being so big. The competition lasted all day and we ended up watching almost the entire thing. We had to wake up early (around 5 am) so we could make sure we would get a spot. We had to walk 30 mins because the roads were closed. A few days later a surf competition “Da hui Backdoor Shootout” was happening which is much more low-key than The Eddie. This Competition happens at Pipeline which is my favourite beach. I got to meet all of my favourite surfers such as Moana Jones Wong, Landon Mcnamara, Bethany Hamilton, Koa Rothman, and Jamie Obrien. I was especially excited to meet Bethany Hamilton because I’ve been looking up to her since I was 6. Koa Rothman ended up winning the competition. Overall, this was such a cool experience and I was so lucky to meet them.
Personal response to “A Christmas Carol”
I found the book A Christmas Carol good but it is not my favourite. I like the idea of the book and think it’s a great read for the winter season, but found it slightly boring seeing as I already know how the story ends. I find the storyline interesting and enjoyable, though. The book is truly a classic and a fun, festive read. It’s a heartwarming book that I would recommend for Christmas. I think it’s cool that Charles Dickens was able to include ghosts in the story as well, giving it a different feel than the normal Christmas stories. I love the message the book gives as well. It shows us that everyone has the chance to behave kinder to each other, and it is okay to change your perspective once in a while. It also tells us that the pursuit of money will not make a person happy, family will. My favourite part was when Ebenezer Scrooge attended his nephew’s dinner and gave Bob Cratchit a pay raise. Not to mention the turkey he gave them since they had to order a goose due to the high price of a turkey. I enjoyed the book more towards the end as it got more interesting. I liked the amount of information and detail the story had because it added to Scrooge’s background as to why he was the way he was. I enjoyed reading Bob Cratchits parts since they included important but sad information about his child Tiny Tim. I liked that Bob Cratchit represented a hard-working man who worked in poor working conditions. The book was very short but packed with little details that made the story more realistic and just overall better. I give the book an 8/10 because of the plot and details it included. To conclude the book was fun and a good Christmas read, I just found it broing at the start.

Kathleen Glasgow’s fictional book Girl in Pieces explores themes of trauma, recovery, and self-discovery. The story follows 17-year-old Charlotte “Charlie” Davis, a girl who has experienced immense pain, including the death of her father, her mother’s neglect, and losing her best friend to suicide. Struggling to cope, Charlie turns to self-harm as a way to manage her emotional turmoil. After a particularly traumatic event lands her in a mental health facility, Charlie embarks on a journey to rebuild her life. She relocates to Tucson, Arizona, where she begins working at a coffee shop. There, she meets an eclectic group of people, including Blue, a tough yet supportive co-worker, and Riley, her brooding but troubled boss. These relationships become pivotal in her journey toward healing.
You think you know someone in the sunlight, but you don’t. There’s something about the dark that makes people lie. You can see their faces but not their hearts. You can hear their words but not their thoughts. And sometimes the dark makes us strangers to ourselves, too. (p.178)
I chose this quotation because It is something I think about constantly. You truly never know what someone is feeling or thinking. You think you know someone when, in reality, they could be the complete opposite of what you think they are like.
Personal respone to J&H
I found “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” very interesting, creative and fascinating. I liked the action but disliked the murder scenes because I found that they were very odd. For example, when Carew was killed, it says Mr. Hyde jumped on him and killed him with a cane, which grossed me out, the thought of it made me uncomfortable. I really enjoyed the plot twists, more specifically when we found out Dr. Jekyll was Mr. Hyde, since nobody suspected it when the book first started. The plot was creative, and I hadn’t read anything like this book before, so it was something new for me. I would rate this book a 7.5/10, maybe even an 8/10, because it had an interesting storyline and included many thrilling chapters. It is a classic book, but it didn’t quite blow me away like other books have. But I still loved the creativity and influence it’s had over time. The book has an interesting look at human nature and the struggle between good and evil, which I found intriguing. I found that the book focused on certain parts but forgot about other points. Some sections were thrilling, but others dragged, especially towards the end when Jekyll’s confession was laid out. Although Dr. Jekylls transformation kept me engaged, seeing as it was so intriguing. This wouldn’t be a book that I would necessarily choose off a bookshelf, but I’m glad I got the opportunity to read it, and I would read it again when I am older because I feel like I would enjoy it more. Even though I think it has flaws, I can see why it is a classic; it’s a short but powerful read. Overall, I think “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde” was enjoyable and interesting but not a personal favourite.
PW#6- Dream vacation
It’s hard for me to say exactly where my dream vacation would be. I want to travel almost everywhere. However, It is an enormous dream of mine to visit Monaco and France. I love Formula One, so getting the opportunity to watch an F1 race in Monaco would be my biggest dream. Witnessing the thrill of watching 20 cars zoom around a track is such a big dream of mine. I have loved France since I was little, so visiting Paris or Nice would be like a childhood dream. They are both so beautiful and have fascinating culture that I love to learn about. I love how Monaco is very luxurious and peaceful. Nice is another place I want to visit; It offers a blend of history, culture and stunning natural beauty. It has a charming old town with narrow streets and vibrant colours. Of course, the places I have listed are expensive, so that is why they will probably stay a dream until I am much older, but I still love to think about it.
Pride and Prejudice- IRJE #5
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a classic novel exploring themes of love, class, family, and personal growth. Set in early 19th-century England, the story centers on the complex relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth initially views Darcy as arrogant and proud, while Darcy sees Elizabeth as beneath him socially. Over time, they both learn to see past their first impressions.
“I have faults enough, but they are not, I hope, of understanding. My temper I dare not vouch for. It is, I believe, too little yielding— certainly too little for the convenience of the world. I cannot forget the follies and vices of other so soon as I ought, nor their offenses against myself. My feelings are not puffed about with every attempt to move them. My temper would perhaps be called resentful. My good opinion once lost, is lost forever.” (pg. 52)
In this quotation, Darcy admits he has flaws, but he believes his judgment and intelligence are sound. This suggests a self-awareness but also a sense of pride in his insight and intellect. He acknowledges that he is stubborn and inflexible, perhaps unwilling to conform to societal expectations or to compromise easily. This inflexibility can be seen as both a flaw and a mark of personal integrity. I picked this quotation because I think it is realistic since not everyone is perfect.
PW#5- Hawaii
I have been to Hawaii every year since I was a few months old. Sometimes, we go twice a year; other times, we go once. For me, Hawaii is like a second home. My dad surfs, so he taught my sister and I how to surf when we were younger, which I still love to do. My favourite beach is Pipeline because I love to watch others surf. Most of the time, we spend one week in Waikiki, and the other week is spent on the North Shore. I prefer the North Shore because it’s quieter and has fewer people. I love Hawaii because of its simple lifestyle and breathtaking nature. The warm temperature year-round and the slight ocean breeze make me extremely happy. Not to forget Hawaii’s beautiful culture and how rich it is in history. I am so lucky I get to visit such a beautiful place every year. Hawaii is often described as Paradise on Earth, which I completely agree with because not only is it special to me, but it is extremely beautiful.
IRJE #4- Elvis and Me
Elvis and Me is a book written by Priscilla Presley. It explains what her life was like with Elvis Presley. The book explores their relationship, from their initial meeting when Priscilla was just 14 years old, to their marriage, life together, and eventual divorce. Their relationship was controversial due to the big age gap. Priscilla has even made a movie about their relationship to show people what Elvis Presley was actually like. Priscilla struggled to have friends while dating Elvis, and this continued even after they had a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
“You have so much to share, you have so much to tell, you have so much you want to expose, so much that’s inside that you’ve learned from that life period. There are really very few people I can share that with.” (p.116)
Priscilla Presley says this quotation. It reflects a deep sense of personal experience and wisdom. The quotation speaks to both the desire to connect with others and the challenge of finding people who can genuinely relate to one’s life journey. She believed few people understood her and appreciated what she had to offer.
IRJE #3- The Catcher in the Rye
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is set in the 1950s and is narrated by a young man, Holden Caufield. Holden makes it clear that he is undergoing treatment at a mental hospital after having had a rough life. Holden suffers from borderline personality disorder, which is a condition identified by an extended period of emotional irregularity. The events he narrates take place a few days between the end of the fall school term and Christmas when he is sixteen years old.
“Among other things, you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behaviour. You’re by no means alone on that score; you’ll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now.” (p. 208-209)
This quotation is said by Mr. Antolini, who is the antagonist of the book and Holden’s former teacher. He explains this to Holden, saying he is not alone in his feeling of disgust for human behaviour, but many people have shared the same honesty about the culture they live in. Holden goes to Mr. Antonili because he feels he can trust and confide in his former teacher, however, this is the event that precipitates his breakdown. He is left unsettled and unsure.
PW#4- The 50s-70s
I have always loved the 50s-70s, specifically the late 50s. My sister always loved them, so naturally, I started to like them, too. The music and fashion style are my absolute favourites. I love the vintage charm and classic elegance. The 50s radiate a blend of glamour and simplicity. Of course, the 50s weren’t anywhere near perfect, but I still find this decade endearing with the polka dot dresses, beautiful hairstyles, and red lipstick. One of my favourite movies is based in the late 50s-60s! “Priscilla” is about Priscilla Presley, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife. Not to mention, this movie is written by my favourite director, Sofia Coppola. I also love Elvis’s music, especially since my grandma and I would always watch “Blue Hawaii” together when I was younger, so his music gives me some nostalgia, of course, to an extent since he died long before I was born. For me, the 50s sound more magical and alive. Phones didn’t exist, which would probably solve most of my problems. Another thing is Audrey Hepburn. I love all of her work, and she inspires me so much. I loved her in “Roman Holiday” and the iconic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.
“Our Town”- Personal Response
I found the play “Our Town” quite enjoyable. It was cool to see actors improvise with little to no props. Emily and George’s character development was charming and emotional, especially when George visited her grave. The emotions near the end made me think about the future and living in the moment. I loved the plot and the role of the stage manager; it added to the play and made it easier for the readers/audience to understand what was happening. The creator (Thorton Wilder) did a very good job of creating a play that includes multiple emotions. I think the meaning of the play is also very important. Saying that we live life without necessarily appreciating what it has to offer, which is true in my case. I didn’t understand the play while reading it, but once we watched it, it all made sense, which I’m happy about. I love that it had no violence and simply just showed the readers/viewers what it was like to live in Grovers Corner, but the author still made it interesting to read and watch. The play highlights the importance of family, community and ordinary life which I also think is very important.
IRJE #2- What Would Audrey Do?
What Would Audrey Do? a book written by Pamela Clarke Keogh. It is a lifestyle guide that explores how Audrey Heburn’s timeless elegance, kindness and poise behaviour can inspire modern women. Through anecdotes and lessons from Audrey’s life, the book offers advice on fashion, relationships, grace, and self-care. It delves into her approach to challenges, personal style, and values like generosity and empathy, encouraging readers to embody her sophistication and kindness in their own lives. The book paints Audrey as more than just a Hollywood icon but a role model for living a graceful and fulfilling life.
“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. I have learned how to live and be in the world and of the world.” (p.148)
Audrey Hepburn was a loving mother to two boys. She has inspired many women, including me. She believed nothing was impossible and you should always follow your dreams. She also believed inside beauty was more important than outside beauty, which I find truly inspiring. In this quotation, she explains that not only is helping others important, but also helping yourself.
PW#3- Favourite Movie
My favourite movie is the “Devil Wears Prada”. This movie is about a young adult who is an intern at a very big fashion magazine “Runway”. The movie takes inspiration from Vogue because the editor of Vogue, Anna Wintour, is known to be very judemental and she would always wear Prada. Meryl Streep played Miranda who is the editor-in-chief of Runway. Andrea Sachs, who is portaryed by Anne Hathway is an intern at Runway but is not interested in fashion. She struggles to be liked by Miranda and the people around her due to her lack of knowledge when it comes to the Runway magazine. Nigel, who is one of Runways leading fashion authorities, helps Andrea and gives her a pep talk. Andrea then ends up becoming Mirandas first assistant rather than her second and gets to travel to Paris for Fashion Week, stealing that opportunity from Emily who used to be Mirandas first assistant. In the end, Andrea ends up leaving because she didnt want to become the person that manipulates her friends just to get ahead. I love this movie not only because of fashion, but also because of the meaning behind it. No matter how hard it was to get it or how many people wish they had it, you are well within youre rights to leave a job that isn’t working for you.
PW#2- London
I have always found so much peace in London. Although they have quite a lot of crime, it is still one of my favourite, if not my favourite, city. The idea of living in Kensington sounds like the perfect life to me. I love the architecture they have as well. London’s neighbourhoods each have their distinct character, whether it’s the bohemian vibe of Camden or the upscale elegance of Kensington. London’s multicultural atmosphere, bustling markets, and endless opportunities make it a unique and exciting place to live. Ever since I visited in the summer, it’s truly all I have been thinking about. Some of my favourite movies were filmed there, such as Notting Hill, and Mamma Mia (only a small fraction of it was filmed there). I also love the amount of opportunities it brings. They have some of the most prestigious universities as well. In the end, living in London sounds perfect.
IRJE #1- Coco Chanel
“Coco Chanel, An Essence of Mystery” written by Isabelle Fiemeyer. Coco Chanel is the founder and namesake of the luxurious brand Chanel. She had a brief career as a signer before her first clothing shop opened in 1910. She grew up in a time when women were expected to wear confining pieces, but her goal was to design classy articles of clothing that were fashionable but also comfortable. Instead of offering corsets and lace frills, she designed wide-leg pants and sailor shirts.

This quote is special because Coco Chanel would say it all the time. She has made a fashion staple and inspired many women to do the same. Her clothes have revolutionized the fashion industry. She may not be alive anymore, but her legacy still stands strong and holds value throughout people’s lives.
PW#1- My favourite season
My favorite season is either fall or spring. I cannot really handle hot temperatures, so summer is my least favorite. However, I enjoy summer when I’m anywhere but Canada because I love to explore new countries. I love it when the leaves on trees turn pink or red, I think it’s so beautiful. I find summer miserable on a muggy day because it’s too hot to do anything. I find winter beautiful only when it snows, especially if it’s fresh snow. Spring is my favorite because it’s when all the flowers start to bloom, and the temperature is perfect, not too hot, not too cold. My birthday is also in the spring so that just adds to it. Fall is also my favorite because it’s like a mix between winter and summer, but better. I’m not the biggest fan of halloween because I dont really like horror but I love fall. Fall and spring both have amazing qualities which makes me like them so much.
My personal opinion on “Master and Man”
I enjoyed Leo Tolstoys “Master and Man” novel to a certain extent. I believe it is a fantastic novel for those who enjoy a good fictional story about the bygone days, like me. However, I did not find this particular one amusing to read, as I had a hard time understanding what the story was about. When the story started to progress and get more interesting near the end, I enjoyed it more and more and started to understand who the characters were and what effect they had on the story. The end of the story was a good way to end the book because it showed that Vasili could be a somewhat good person and, despite all of the egotistical behaviour, he still saved Nikita’s life by laying on top of Nikita to keep him warm. The subtle humour made the story more enjoyable and made it feel more like real life rather than just a fictional book. I would’ve liked to know more about Vasili’s past and how he came to be. I feel like it would enrich the story to make it more enjoyable.

Hello! My name is Avery Adamschek. I was born in Vancouver on May 20th, 2010. My family and I moved to Victoria when I was around 3-4 years old to be with the rest of my family. I have a dog, Kona. He is a labradoodle which is a Labrador and doodle mixed. My favourite colour is light pink because it reminds me of my favourite flowers which are peonies. My dream is to move to Paris when I’m older. Paris is rich in culture and art, two things I love. I also think it has a lot of amazing job opportunities. I love fashion, vogue, shopping, poems, and tea! I love to visit new places, especially when it’s a city.
