This personal writing is about my next basketball tournament in Vancouver. I have a very important tournament coming up in Vancouver on November 22-23. Me and my team will be playing against several other teams from all over Vancouver. We will have approximately 3 games per day which will be quite tiring. I believe that if we continue to push ourselves in practice and work our hardest, it will translate to our games that weekend. We will be pushing for first place and giving it our all. I really enjoy these types of tournaments as i get to travel off of the island and do what i love with my amazing teammates. I am looking forward to this tournament!

IRJE #4 – Archie Siminel
The title of my book is “ Hatchet” and the author is Gary Paulsen Hatchet is an adventure novel about Brian Robeson’s survival after a plane crash. The novel shows examples of positive thinking and perseverance as Brian faces challenges from nature, like bears, porcupines, dehydration, and starvation, all with only his trusty hatchet to help him. “Patience, he thought. So much of this was patience waiting and thinking and doing things right. So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking”. I chose this quote because patience is very important and if your not patient then you will not succeed because patience is needed in everything.
IRJE#3 We have always lived in the castle
“We have always lives in the castle” by Shirley Jackson is an intriguing story that follows the life of a young girl with antisocial personality disorder, her name is Merricat Blackwood. Merricat lives in a mansion with her uncle Julian and her sister Constance. The rest of her family died from poisoning. Merricat lives in a society where people don’t like their family. Merricat has to go through a lot of tension while getting the groceries for Constance, everyone in her village judges her and makes mean comments about the family. People are still trying to solve the mystery of who poisoned the family. Constance and Merricat were sexually abused by their father. We find out later that Merricat was the one who poisoned the family. She put poison in the sugar because she knew that her sister Constance did not eat sugar, and she wanted her to stay alive because she loved her.
I decided that I would chose three powerful words, words of strong protection, and so as long as these words were never spoken aloud no change would come. I wrote the first word – Melody – in the apricot jam on my toast with the handle of my spoon and then put the toast in my mouth and ate it very quickly. I was one third safe. (p. 49)
This quotation represents how unsafe Merricat feels. She doesn’t like change and she gets scared really easily. That’s why she poisoned her family.
IRJE #4 Dragonsong
Dragonsong is a book written by Anne McCaffrey featuring a young girl called Menolly, whose dream is to make music and sing. But her father is incredibly strict as women aren’t generally allowed to sing. So after a tragic incident leading to her severely injuring her hand and no longer being able to play, she runs away from home and lives alone in a cave with 9 fire lizards as her friends. When she is caught outside during a thread fall she is rescued by a patrolling dragonrider, and taken back to the weyr, where she eventually leaves to go to the harper hall to pursue her dream of music.
“Does he hear what I’m telling you?” Menolly whispered anxiously in T’gellan’s ear. “Yes, so be careful how you speak of him. He’s very sensitive.” “I haven’t said anything, have I, that would hurt his feelings?” “Menolly!” T’gellan looked back at her, grinning, “I was teasing you.” “Oh!”
I chose this quote because She is talking to a dragonrider about his dragon. Literally a gigantic dragon up to 45 meters in length and height, and she is worried about hurting his feelings. I just thought it was really funny. Also I was really struggling to find another quote.
IRJE#4
The book is Harry Potter Sorcerer Stone by J.K Rowling. Uncle Vernon was trying to be nice to Harry. Then they heard the mail man dropping off the mail for that day. Earlier before that day there had been another letter. They also argued when Harry wanted the letter but Uncle Vernon would give it to then.
With a strangled cry, Uncle Vernon leapt from his seat and ran down the
hall, Harry right behind him. Uncle Vernon had to wrestle Dudley to the
ground to get the letter from him, which was made difficult by the fact
that Harry had grabbed Uncle Vernon around the neck from behind. After a
minute of confused fighting, in which everyone got hit a lot by the
Smelting stick, Uncle Vernon straightened up, gasping for breath, with
Harry’s letter clutched in his hand (p.30).
I love this quotation because it represents Uncle Vernon and Harry’s relationship throughout the book and how the rivalry they have. I also love how J.K Rowling says everyone got hit by the Smelting stick even though he was going for just Harry.
IRJE#3
The book is called Harry Potter Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. The book is about a kid named Harry Potter who goes to a school called Hogwarts, it’s a school for wizards and witches. This quotation talks about the dream Harry was having before his aunt woke him up and it explains the dream that he is trying to remember after being woken up.
There had been a flying motorcycle in it. He had a funny feeling he’d had the same dream before.
His aunt was back outside the door.
“Are you up yet?” she demanded.
“Nearly,” said Harry. ”
Well, get a move on, I want you to look after the bacon. And don’t you dare let it burn, I want everything perfect on Duddy’s birthday.”
Harry groaned.
“What did you say?” his aunt snapped through the door.
“Nothing, nothing…” (p.15)
I chose this quotation because I can relate to how Harry Potter felt in that moment.
IJRE #4 – The end of the catcher in the rye.
I just finished reading the catcher in the rye and the ending was a bit sad. Holden meets up with Phoebe to talk, but he waits for her for a long time before she shows up. When she does, she comes with one of his old suitcases filled with some of his clothes from home. He takes her to the zoo, and they talk for a while before he pays he pays for her to go on a ride. He is filled with happiness. When it’s time for him to leave, Phoebe begs to come with him, but he denies and tells her that she cant. He tells her that he is not leaving and he will go home at the end of the walk at the park.
“Then the carousel started, and I watched her go round and round…All the kids tried to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she’d fall off the goddam horse, but I didn’t say or do anything.”
He had many thoughts when phoebe was on the carousel, the thoughts that were made clear to us showed that he was afraid of something, it shows that he was afraid of her falling of or injuring herself on the ride, but he is probably just scared of missing her too much. At the end, he says:
“Don’t tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody”
These were Holden’s last words to Phoebe before he left. this phrase could have multiple interpretations. The main one tells us that Holden has started to change and is hopeful for the future he has ahead of him, and he is no longer bitter and angered by the thoughts of having to deal with everything and everyone.
IRJE#4 – How Things Make People Feel
The DaVinci Code, by Dan Brown is the book I have been reading for a while now. It is about a symbologist named Robert Langdon, who meets a cryptographer named Sophie Neveu at the Louvre museum in Paris when they are investigating a strange murder. The person who was murdered left a code and arranged his body in a particular way that meant something to Langdon and Sophie, But no one else. Them discovering and deciphering the code entangled them in a dispute between the Priory of Son and Opus Dei over a possibility of a child.
Telling someone about what a symbol “meant” was like telling them how a song should make them feel – it was different for all people (p.35).
This quotation symbolises and reminds us of perspective, and how everybody has a different one. Everybody looks at a situation differently, but it also makes us think about the other part of perspective, that everybody views the same thing differently. 100 people can listen to the same song, and if you give them enough describing words to use, each person will probably have a different description of what the song meant to them, and how it made them feel. Same thing with paintings, and symbols.
IRJE #4 – Lies
I am reading Lies by Michael Grant. Its the third book in the Gone Series. This series is about if one day, all the people over 15 disappeared. In this book there is a character named Drake Merwin and he is a complete psychopath. Later in the book when he came into contact with the main character of the story, Sam, his arm was burned off by him. Unfortunately this lead to him getting a ‘whip hand’ from a dark force. And Drake became even worse. Later in the book Sam (the main character) was confronting Drake for doing something bad. However, in that certain time and place they where in a Nuclear plant and if Sam resisted Drake he would wipe out the entire FAYZ with uranium. So for a long period of time, Sam was useless while Drake hit him so hard his skin spit open and he was bleeding a lot leaving him traumatized. And when Sam’s brother Caine, finally buried Drake, along with the uranium, Sam was able to put himself a ease. However, eventually Sam found out that he was alive, he was panicking.
But he had endured. And he’d lived through the next nightmarish hours, the
morphine hallucinations, the staggering, stumbling, needing-to-scream hours.
He had fought Drake again, but it was Caine who had finally killed the
psychopath. Caine had thrown Drake down a mine shaft that then collapsed on Drake’s
head. Nothing could have survived.
And yet, Drake was alive.
He’d coped since that day by knowing that Drake was dead, buried under tons of
rock, dead, gone, never to be faced again. That fact had let him cope.
But if Drake was unkillable . . .
Immortal . . . (p. 305)
Fear can change a person for the worse. In this text fear turned the strongest and most fearless person in the FAYZ into a mess who was terrified of everything.
IRJE #4 – Make Your Next Shot Your Best Shot
In the book Make Your Next Shot Your Best Shot by Dr Bob Rotella, it stresses the idea of anyone can be great if you want to be. He talks about the idea of people putting in the effort and exceeding while if you don’t believe in yourself you aren’t going anywhere. To reach your best potential you need to surround yourself with people who support you and believe in you. If your coach told you at you could just be good or you could be ok…. would you believe in yourself then? Finding people who believe in you and can help you become great is so important.
“I only think you’re delusional if you’re thinking you’re going to be successful in your quest without a work ethic, belief, discipline, persistence, or patience (p. 41).”
This quotes stresses the idea of putting in the effort. No great athlete became great without practice, practice and more practice. If you keep pushing and practicing everyday it will eventually come. Sometimes it will take weeks, months or even years but you just have to be patient. Greatness takes time.
IRJE #3 – Picking Daisies on Sundays
Picking Daisies on Sundays by Liana Cincotti is a friends-to-lovers romance novel. The story starts with Daniella, known as ‘Daisy’ who is a hopeless romantic finding herself near the end of college. She enters into a fake relationship with her childhood best friend, and first love named Levi. They initially enter the fake relationship for convenience, but slowly realize they have deeper feelings for eachother.
Being with you is like coming home after a long journey. I’d forgotten the feeling of comfort and certainty you bring. It’s as if every Sunday, we were just picking up where we left off, each petal a memory, each laugh a promise of something more.
This statement represents the comfort between the characters, and how they trust and rely on eachother. “Coming home” represents that they find safety, and belonging when they’re with eachother. Throughout the book they switch perspectives, giving a viewpoint on each characters emotions and thought process.
Overall, the story reminded me that sometimes love can feel like a journey, where past feelings and new experiences collide. It made me think about second chances, and how important it is to be honest to have a true connection with another person.
IRJE #3 The Boy in the Stripped Pijamas
The Boy in The Stripped Pijamas is a book thats based on world war II, where the an 8 year old living in Berlin to take residence near a concentration camp, witch his father was just going to be the commandant. Bruno was sad, he didn’t wanted to live his friends and house, Bruno alone at his home one day he looked at his window and saw the concentration camp but he didin’t know what was it, he wondered why the big chimneys smelled so bad and why was everyone wearing pijamas, one day he decided to go explore, he found the camp, bruno realized that near the fence was a boy, looking sad, but what bruno was most intrigued about was that he was wearing striped pijamas. he asked was his name was at first he was quiet and didn’t say a word but after time he told him his name Shmuel, Shmuel and Bruno became friends and every chance bruno had he went to see Shmuel.
“We’re not supposed to be friends, you and me. We’re meant to be enemies. Did you know that?” (p. #)
This quotation’s meaning is that Bruno and Shmuel are from different worlds, Shmuel was jewish and Bruno was the son of a Nazi, more specific the son of the concentration camp commandant. So Brunos dad is all against jewish people witch exactly Shmuel happens to be jewish, that is why Bruno bruno says they aren’t supposed to be friends they are men’t to be enemies, because all of the bad things brunos dad has told him about jewish people.
PW #3 Ballet
I have a love hate relationship with Ballet, i have been doing ballet since i was 4 years old. I have always loved the music, the beautiful costumes, everything. I have always seen ballet as a beautiful classic and elegant dance style, when i was little i always admire the big girls in my dance academy, for the recitals they used big tutus and point shoes, the point shoes where the thing that i was exited the most. Everything is easier at the beginning and keeps getting harder throughout you go forward to it, learning the dances, every move , the names of the song and exercises its very difficult, and its worse when you see the teacher as your biggest enemy, always pushing you harder to make more difficult things every time, compare you to other classmates, always making you feel less. Every time class got hard i wanted to quit but i remembered how beautiful the big girls dance with their point shoes and tutus, so i kept going, i pushed my self very hard, put in extra effort until i finally was at a level to get them, my first impression of them wasn’t that good because the first thing i had to do was sew every single ribbon onto the point shoe, it was very hard learning to sew, i pinched my self with the needle in various occasions, my fisrt time using them was horrible, so painful but the teacher said it was because it was the first time i was using them, and as time goes by ill shape them. i kept using them for 2 years and those where the worst years in ballet of my life, i went two classes a week 2 hours, it was so painful, having blisters every time, always being so tired, with muscular pain everywhere. so this June after after the recital i choose it was going to be my last ballet recital for a while.

We find out at the end of the book that Andie bell wasn’t killed and was in a relationship with Elliot Ward a teacher at Fairveiw and threatening to out him if he stopped doing what she wanted. We are also told that Andie went to Elliots house one day and was upset about sal leaving for university. she began destroying paintings that Elliots wife had made a few days before she had died. Elliot pushed her away from them but pushing her towards his desk hitting her head. He ran to get the first aid kit but when he was back she was gone. Following the times Andie went missing Elliot began to panic and decided to kill Sal this is how the conversation with Elliot and Pip went:
Elliot: I called in sick for work and dropped the girls off at school. I waited outside, and when I saw sal alone in the parking lot I went up too talk to him. he wasn’t copping well with her disseverance. so I suggested that we go back to his house and have a chat about it. id planned to do it with a knife from the Singhs house. but then I found some sleeping pills in the bathroom and I decided to take him to the woods; I thought it would be kinder. I didn’t want his family to find him. we had coffee and I gave him the first three for his headache. I convinced him that we should go to the forest and look for and ourselves; that it would help his feeling of helplessness. he trusted me. he didn’t wonder why I hasdnt taken off my leather gloves. I took a plastic bag from their kitchen and walked out into the woods, and when we walked far enough into the woods. I had a penknife and held it up to his neck and forced him to swallow more. I said I was helping him that he wouldn’t be a suspect if it looked like he’d been attacked too. he swallowed a few more and then he started to struggle. I held him down and forced him to take more. when he’d started to get sleepy I held him and started to talk about Yale, about the amazing the librarys, how beautiful campus looks in spring just so he would fall asleep, thinking about something good when he fell asleep, when he lost consciousness I put the bag around his head and held his hand while he died.
pip: then u sent the confession text to his dad.
Elliot: yes.
pip: and Andies blood?
Elliot: it dried under my desk, I missed some when I had first cleaned, so I placed some under his nails with tweezers and put Andies phone in his pocket and I left him there.
Pip finds out the rest of the story and discovers and bell in the addict of Elliots old home where he had been keeping her but pip believes it’s not Andie.
Master and Man Introduction
Master man by Leo Tolstoy, I really don’t like the book of Master Man. In my opinion, this story was burning. First, I didn’t like the story; it wasn’t interesting. I think this novel was huge. I try to concentrate on the story, but all the story is mixed; anything is happening at the same time. Nikita always discusses alcohol and his alcoholic problems. For me, Vasily is too selfish.
My introduction
Hi, My name is Diego, and I am 14 years old. I was born on September 3rd, 2024. I am from Guadalajara, Mexico. We are 4 in my family. When I was little, I lived some years in Mexico City When I turn 3 years old, we move to Guadalajara, where all my family is from. Then my brother was born when I was 3 years old. Last year I moved to my new house. We get another dog; we already have 3, and now I have 4. The races of the 4 dogs are Golden Retriever, Goldendoodle, French Pound, and another with no race.
M&M personal response
After reading Master and Man, I quite think overall it is a very good story, But I personally struggle a lot to follow it because I don´t understand it very well, the vocabulary that Leo Tolstoy uses in the story was a little difficult for me to understand, I usually get the plot of the story in which the man named Vasili Andreevich and Nikita, his servant get into a journey and get lost when trying to arrive to a town, for me it was really boring that most of the story is about both geting lost along with their horse, during all the story I tried to catch up and try to see character development in both characters, that was the only thing I founded interesting during all the story.
IRJE#4 – Five Survive
Five survive, by Holly Jackson, is about 6 friends who are taking a road trip for spring break and on their road trip they got lost, they took a turn and ended up in a dead end forest road. While they were trying to turn around they popped one tire, which they figured out and fixed easily. Once they got back in the RV that they were driving for spring break, turned around, and all four tires went out. This means they were stranded and they had no cell service. They went out to check it out, and the gas tank was also leaking, someone had shot at the RV.
Simon scoffed. ‘Sure, just a misunderstanding. There’s a sniper out there with a high-powered rifle and a laser sight who’s decided to use us as target practice. But yeah, just a misunderstanding.’ He’d changed his tone. (p.70)
In this quotation Simon (one of the 6 friends) is responding to one of his friends who says that maybe this person thought they were someone else and they didn’t mean to shoot at them. In this quotation he is being very sassy towards his friend and saying sarcastically that what his friend said was very wrong.
Personal response to “Our Town”
The play “Our Town” was a really nice play, I really enjoyed watching it, I liked more watching it that reading it, because when reading it I really could not understand it very clear, while watching the play it was really confusing when actor used imaginary objects, but I liked that because it really makes you think and analyze the situation of the play using our own imagination and creativity. Although is not my favorite type of books I think it is a really nice play that is worth watching it, The actors did an amazing job, their expressions and body language in acting was very accurate to the character played, also I was really surprise because of the different type of narrator, as he could talk and interact with actors, I think is really cool that the stage manager was a real part of the play, overall I give the play a 7 out of 10, for me it was boring at the very start, and I would change a little the houses layout because for me it was difficult to understand what scene was, But I like how this play requires and makes you have a critical thinking and see and understad life in many different perspective, in this case on people in a different time.
PW# 4How traveling makes me happy
I love to travel, in my family it is one of our favorites things ever, I love to travel with my parents and my sister, in all my 14 years of life my parent have given me the opportunity no visit a lot of places and I am really grateful for that, I can say that we travel a lot and that makes me really happy, Me and my family love to visit new countries, new cultures, landscapes, traditions, try new food, history, and a lot of things, my favorite destinations so far have been, London, Paris, Greece and Italy, some day I would like to visit Dubai, Bali or the Maldives and also I would like to visit more of Italy, specially the Amalfi coast because of Italy I have only Visit Rome and Venice, Italy is one of my favorite countries, I love how beautiful it is, the food is very good and I love the language, I have family on Rome and I would really like to learn Italian, I basically love Europe, but I place I can visit a 100 times and never get tired of it is Cartagena, a very beautiful city in Colombia, I like it because it is really colorful and it just give me happiness, the sunsets are incredible and the food is amazing, I go normally every year.
PW#3 How my friends became family
Since I was a little kid I have always appreciate my friends really much, I consider myself a very friendly girl, I like to talk a lot and make new friends, I know my 2 best friends since I was little, I have grown up with them, I have known them for 7 to 8 years ago, we have always been together in the classroom, we have become like sisters, this is my first year ever without them, I love my school in Colombia. My birthday is the 20th of April, usually my birthday falls into “Semana Santa” which in my school they give us 2 weeks of vacations and 3 years ago my parents surprise me with a trip to Santa Marta, a city in Colombia with a beautiful beach on it, a trip with all my friends, since there, it has became a tradition, all years in those 2 weeks we go to Santa Marta with all my friends, we are 7 in my group of friends, and since then, we all travel together and spend time with each other very often, because our parent are also very friends, I even spent Christmas with them, So my friends are very special to me and I could not ask for better friends that them.
IRJE #3 Twilight: New Moon
Twilight: New Moon is the second book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. The story starts with Bella Swan being sad because her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen left. Edward leaves Bella because he wanted to protect her from the dangers of his world, leaving her so sad. Bella struggles to keep up with her life after Edward leaving, so she finds support with Jacob Black who is his friend since she was little. As Bella is with Jacob, she discovers that he is a werewolf (the werewolf’s are the rivals of the vampires). Bella and Jacob develop a strong bond, but Bella is still in love with Edward.
“You know that I love you. I’ve loved you for a long time. But I can’t keep pretending that I don’t. I can’t keep pretending that I don’t want you.”
The quotation is about Jacob telling Bella how he fells about her but Bella begins to take bad risks, hoping that by doing them, Edward might return to save her, and when she is in danger she fells a connection with him. Then Bella is faced with a really bad situation, and this makes Edward believe that she has died. This makes Edward travel to Italy to talk to Volturi (a powerful vampire coven), into killing him. Bella, with Jacob’s help, went to save him, and this end up with a big fight. In the end, Edward and Bella are reunited, but the book ends by Bella still confused between her love for Edward and the friendship with Jacob, this makes us think that in the next book there will be fight between Edward and Jacob.
IRJE 3
The Lord of the flies by William Golding
The lord of the flies is a amazing book that talks about the dark side to humanity it is very interesting as well as very depressing. The story line of the book is about a group of British boys that are stranded on on a deserted island they try to start there own society and make there own rules however it gets hard because there is no adults there and the kids start to become violent and brutal.
“Maybe there is a beast maybe it’s only us.”
This quote is very deep and means a lot it is trying to say that the boys did believe in the beast but that the beast is actually the evil in each one of them this has lots of sense to it and is a very wise quote. I suggest to read this book if you enjoy sad and intense plots.
IRJE #3 – Archie S
The book is called “Lebron James life lessons from the king”.
The book is written by Brian boone. It is about Lebron James and how he grew up as well as worked extremely hard to achieve his dreams of becoming a professional basketball player. Lebron James now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers and is now a very successful athlete.
“Greatness is defined by how much you want to put into what you do.”
I chose this quote because it always motivates me too. It tells me that laziness is not an option and I need to push as hard as I can if I want to get somewhere. The more you work, the higher the reward. If you don’t want to put in the work, then you shouldn’t expect and reward.
PW #4 – Survivor
One of my favourite shows ever is Survivor. I have many favourites but Survivor is definitely at the top of the list. The show is kind of hard to explain because there are so many different concepts involved. But what basically happens is that they are split into tribes with various others members. They usually will have 18 people overall and 3 tribes of 6. Each episode they compete in challenges and whichever teams comes last has to go to something called Tribal Council. They go here at night and they have to vote someone off of their tribe. Whichever person has the most votes is gone. The game does become interesting when advantages get played like idols, block/steal a vote, Safety without power etc. I love this show because it always keeps me interested. There has been 47 seasons so far and I continue to watch and rewatch them. The show is hosted by someone named Jeff Probost and he has ran the show from the start. He runs tribal, the challenges and is basically in-charge of the whole show. Survivor is on every Wednesday night so I always stay up to watch it.
PW #4 – By Archie
My personal writing is about the time that I went to California. I went on vacation to San Jose and San Francisco in May. Me and my family did so many fun things.
First off, we went to California’s Great America, which is one of the coolest amusement parks I have ever been to. I went on a massive rollercoaster, which is one of the oldest in the park. It is called the Grizzly, and it was made in 1986. The ride had a massive drop on it which felt like we were going 100 kilometers an hour down a completely vertical drop from what felt like a 100 feet high. This was definitely one of the main highlights of my trip.
Another really cool memory was when we ordered a self-driving taxi. This car was called “Waymo”, and it drove and navigated around San Francisco completely on its own, which was such a cool but scary experience at the same time. It felt really weird completely putting our lives in the hands of technology, but it was still very cool and futuristic.
The last highlight of my trip was buying new basketball shoes. The shoes I bought were called “Ja Morant 1”. They are the signature shoes of a professional NBA player named Ja Morant. I purchased these in Footlocker, and I still wear them to this day.
Overall, I have created so many memories, visiting museums, the San Francisco landmark Golden Bridge, eating yummy food, and enjoying beautiful weather with my family. I hope to come back one day!
PW#4 What I Would do If I Was Stuck In The Desert
If I was someday stuck In the desert, I would probably try walking for as long as I possibly could before dark, and then I would dig as much of a hole as possible with my hands, given that I am mostly certain I wouldn’t be stuck in the desert with a shovel. After that, I would go in the hole that I have made, bury myself in the sand for as much warmth as sand can give you. Then I would try to sleep through the whole night without freezing to death or having some deadly snake or animal bite-me or even kill me-while I’m asleep. If morning came around and if I was still in one piece, I would try to find some dead bushes, sticks, or rocks to start a fire to single, hopefully, some plane or aircraft flying above my head to notice that I’m stranded. Hopefully, the person that notices me will be nice enough to save me and not just leave me to die. After that, I would try to find some sort of food that, hopefully once again won’t kill me. I would also try to find a big rock to use as a gravestone to put at my head in case I feel like I am starting to die, I would write my name on it with the blood of a nearby animal so that if, someone would discover my dead body, they would at least know who it was. Nevertheless, of course, this whole scenario of ever getting stuck in the dessert is hypothetical-hopefully, but again, this could happen to anyone; you never know.
IRJE #3- The Unteachables
The Unteachables by Gordon Korman, is a humorous and sweet novel that follows a group of middle school misfits and their unconventional teacher. The story follows the students of room 117, a class of students that have been named “unteachable” by their school. Each student is dealing with struggles or behavioral issues, from an obsessions with video games to bad attitudes or academic struggles. The class is led by Mr. Korman, a teacher who hates his life has been assigned to teach room 117 as his last job before retirement. The class calls him “Mr. Kermit” just like the frog. As the story goes on, Mr. Korman starts to connect with the students, discovering their unique talents and personalities.
“Justice and fairness aren’t, and never will be apart of the social studies curriculum; you know their building blocks of our entire society. Just because you’ve got anger management problems doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to be ticked off about. Let me tell you about spirit.” (p. 42)
This quotation said by Mr. Korman, to the class after the principal came to tell the class they cant go on the field trip, because of their behavior. Mr. Korman is acknowledging that while concepts like justice and fairness may not always be taught, they are essential principles for society to function.
PW#4 Prince Cucumber
After the tragic death of his father King Pickle, Prince Cucumber was unsure what to do. He had not yet been pickled and there was no time to waste, with the dragons being the only creatures left in the kingdom besides his loyal cucumbers, everyone was in danger. The process of being pickled happens when the cucumber next in line for the throne is pickled and becomes king. The dragons had wreaked havoc on his kingdom and were terrifying the people. The only thing he could think to do at this time was to call upon his neighboring, and much more technologically advanced kingdom, the kingdom of kabbage, pronounced KUH-BAH-JE. Which was ruled by his mortal enemy King Aubergine. King Aubergine was always starting conflicts which thankfully up until now Prince Cucumbers kingdom had been safe from because of the dragons that had been protecting them. Once he explained the situation to his fellow king, the kingdom of Kabbage flew in a large glass dome to protect against the flying dragons. The solution worked well enough for a while, until people started to worry about oxygen. But the kingdom didn’t even come close to running out of oxygen before they were struck by a bigger problem. The dragons were now flaming their dome, and the glass was trapping all of the heat inside and making it unbearably hot! So he called upon his friend, King Pomme De Tato, who had his army lift the dome immediately to save the people, and decided to do the only fair thing which was to train the dragons and use them. But that didn’t work and many people died so they gave up and shot them down, and ate them for dinner along with a nice salad.

Relentless is a book made by Tim’s Grover a personal trainer who has trained mutable professional athletes like Michel Jordan and Kobe Bryant. The book is about how to achieve mental and physical dominance and showing how to be relentless and to have the ability to achieve whatever you want. In the book he explains what it takes to be a professional and in the book he tells a secret about how to become a professional athlete.
“Cleaner law: When you’re going through a world of pain, you never hide it. You show up to work ready to go, you face adversity and your critics and those who judge you, you step into the zone and perform at the top level when everyone else is expecting you to falter. That’s being a professional.” (p. 172)
This means that if you want to be a professional or a famous athlete you can’t let your emotions or others stop you from moving forward. You have to keep coming to practice, going to the gym to work out, stay focused on your goals, and don’t let your emotions or people put you down. So if people are thinking that you are going to fail or not do good in a game you have to prove them wrong by not letting your problems take over you and make you do bad, you have to stay focused and perform. That is what you have to do to become a professional.
