This delightful, bouncy composition<\/a> was written, ironically enough, to celebrate the victory of Austro-Hungarian imperial forces, led by Field Marshall Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, over the Italian army at the Battle of Custoza. Radetzky’s victory at Custoza led quickly to the final defeat of the Italian forces, who were attempting to gain their independence from the Austrians\u2014just one episode among many such uprisings in favour of democracy, economic justice, constitutional government, and independence that erupted across Europe in 1848 and that were all, like the Italian effort, defeated by the end of 1849\u2014showing, once again, that art and morality are not necessarily good bedfellows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
