Mateo Torrez

In the book, They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, Mateo Torrez is kind, when he was with Rufus they saw a homeless man on the street asking for money and Rufus didn’t want to give him money, but Mateo did he said they were dying anyway. He thought they could do good actions for people who need them, after giving the man the money he smiled and thanked them, Mateo said it seemed a lot of people acted like he was invisible, but they didn’t and that made the man really happy, that’s why Mateo said:

I think we made his day by not pretending he’s invisible.

When he said that, you can see how caring he is for others, even if he doesn’t know them, that reminds me of when you’re having a bad day and some random people can make your day by doing little actions, by just smiling or being friendly and polite. In the same way, everyone can make a day better if it’s just doing those kinds of simple things.

Vancouver trip

So, this weekend I made a day trip to Vancouver. In the beginning, I thought it was going to be hard to get my parent’s permission and the school’s permission, but my parents said it was fine if I did it with friends so I asked two friends from the dorms and they said it was fine and Miss Thia was so helpful talking with Miss Bayes so we could get authorization from the school, she said yes. On Saturday morning I woke up at 5 in the morning so I could take a shower and get ready with no pressure. We left in a taxi at 6:30, we went on the 9:00 am ferry, we arrived at 10:30 so we went downtown and had breakfast, I meet a friend from Mexico and we separate from my other friends she showed me a pretty park, we sat there and talk. Then another friend from grade 12 from Brookes who was staying in Vancouver for a week, came. My friend from Mexico left and I stayed all day with my other friend, we went to the aquarium and Stanley park, then he showed me one of his favorite activities to do in Vancouver, after a long day it was time to go on the 9 pm ferry, so I said goodbye to my friend and we left, everyone was really tired, we arrived at school at 11 pm so we all went to sleep.

Lidia

Lidia is a character that appears in the book They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. She is a very caring person. She used to have a boyfriend who died when she was pregnant, she’s also one of the few friends Mateo has. Lidia got out of school to take care of her daughter, even when she is scared of her future like when she said:

This is Penny’s beginning. And one day she’ll find herself on the terrible end of a Death-Cast call and it sucks how we’re all being raised to die. Yes, we live, or we’re given the chance to, at least, but sometimes living is hard and complicated because of fear.    (p. 89)

I understand her because her daughter is the only thing she has left of the person she used to love, and only thinking her daughter will die can make her feel anxious, but these days she only thinks of giving her the best life she can have.

Poems and more poems

This term we have been reading poems and some of them are very interesting to me. Everyone has a different opinion and we need to respect that. At this time my favorite poem is, Not Waving but Drowning by Stevie Smith, I liked it because when you read it, it looks simple but if you think about the meaning, what I understood is some people might look fine, but they’re not and they don’t know how to express their feelings or maybe ask for help.

The poem I didn’t like at all is the Sestina by Elizabeth Bishop, I kind of like that you play with the last words, but when you do those kinds of things is tough to understand the real meaning of the poem, because it can be very repetitive and also can be trying to read it.

My dreams

Everybody sleeps, but not everybody can remember their dreams. Sometimes I do, so I’m going to write what I dreamed of last night. Everything started in my house in Mexico, I was back from Canada, with my friends and we were getting ready to go out. Then we were at Pizza hut and we ate some pizza with Obama and he told us some funny jokes, finally we went back to my house and I woke up.

Rufus Emeterio

Rufus Emeterio is another character in the book They Both Die At The End, written by Adam Silvera. He also got the call from the Death-Cast that he was dying, that’s a thing he has in common with Mateo. Rufus has lived a hard life since he saw his parents and sister dying in a car accident since then he has lived in a foster house. In my opinion, he is carefree about dying, it seems like he doesn’t care, because of some things he has said, for example in his profile on the app “last friends” which helps people that are dying that day, he said:

Who you where in life: I survived something I shouldn’t have.

Final thoughts: It’s about time, I’ve made mistakes, but I’m gonna go out right. (p.72 )

It seemed like he had already accepted his fate. I think is because of all of the things he has been through, like the thing watching his family die. From another point of view, I think it’s a good thing to accept your fate. At some point, everyone is going to die and i think is important to live your last day how you want to, that also gives you the chance to say goodbye to the people you care bout and he’s doing all of that.

My favorite things

I have a lot of free time sometimes, that’s when I take the opportunity to do what I like the most, like watching movies or some series on Netflix, my favorite show is called American Horror Story, which is about some historical stories about American stories that have been true, and my favorite movie is 10 things I hate about you, is just another love movie. Another thing I also like doing in my free time is doing crafts like painting or coloring, recently I started making puzzles with my friends and I’m really liking it. But my favorite thing to do is sleeping, I can sleep for hours and I enjoy it.

My week

It started on Monday, I had my usual classes and after school, I had my first ASA of this term, it was paddleboarding, we went to Thethis lake and everyone knew how to do it, I really like it, it was very relaxing with all the nature around. Then Tuesday came my second ASA was tenis I played with Andres and realized how much I missed playing tennis. After I didn’t do anything after school until Tuesday I went out with a friend to London drugs and on Friday we didn’t have classes and I went bowling with the dorms. On Saturday I went downtown with Fernanda to see a friend from Vancouver, on the afternoon I made smores with the dorms, and the rest of the weekend I rest.

THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END

The main character in this chapter is called Mateo, it seems like he has anxiety and he also has trouble concentrating. He got that call from the Death-Cast, which is the organization in charge of calling people and informing them that they’re going to die sometime in the next 24 hours. Mateo started to overthink everything how he only has two real friends and how there are just a few people that are going to miss him, his dad and his best friend Lydia.

“The list of people I will miss, if the dead can miss anyone, is so short I shouldn’t even called a list: there’s Dad, for doing his best; my best friend, Lydia, not only for not ignoring me the hallways, but for actually sitting down across from me in lunch, partnering with me in earth science. And that’s it. (p. 8)

Ms. Aija Trip

One Day at Brookes Ms. Aija made a decision

she was going to make a camping trip

everyone wanted to go, but she said

“Everyone needs to give me a tip”.

Just some students listened to her

and some didn’t because they thought it wasn’t fair

they made a plan together

They were going to make a fire.

Ms. Thia heard about it and she was disappointed

she couldn’t believe what was going on

she said she was going to stop their plan

the students said the mastermind was John.

Ms. Thia talked with John to solve the problem

they agreed on a solution

the next trips wouldn’t require a tip

that was their conclusion.

When the students returned from the trip

they started talking about how amazing was

they made a fire and smores

they also ride some cars.

All the students were planning another trip

it was going to be going camping

everyone has happy about it

one activity was painting.

The days came and so did the camping

after class, the buses were ready to leave

everyone was singing on the bus

and then Fernanda opened a bag of nuts.

She forgot Dina was allergic

Fernanda was really sorry, but she apologized

she didn’t want to be in any trouble

before anyone thought she could’ve done a homicide

My Improvement

Personally, I think my writing improved since my first writings. I know because now I learned how to not write a lot of run-on sentences, and my grammar improved. When I read my old posts I couldn’t understand them at all, some of the words I used to write in the posts didn’t have sense, I needed to use more comas and be more specific with the words I was using. I learned that before I start writing I need to clear my mind and think about the main ideas of the topic.

Essays we read

When you read essays you can have a lot of thoughts like thinking deeply. For example, “Enough Is Enough”. This essay made me think deeply because it talks about sexism and how a lot of people suffer this every day, the author talks about how she made a website where a lot of people can write their stories, you can choose your language so you can write more comfortable. this website has the purpose to make awareness in everyone, and to women, so they can know how to take care of themselves. Another essay that made me think deeply was “Down the Mine”, it made me realize that I need to appreciate more the things I have and be thankful for everything because a lot of people go through a lot to get a lot of essential things. like the man who wrote the essay, he went through a lot, he showed commitment, and he came out of his comfort zone to show how difficult the lives of the miners were. I think everyone should be thankful for what they have, and never complain because there’s always going to be someone better and worst than you.

More essays touched my feelings for example, “Searching for Home”. When I started reading, I thought it was going to be an essay about Chinese culture. but I noticed it wasn’t, the writer wrote the stories she knew about her grandparents, and parents. I think it’s really important to know the past of your family because it’s where you came from, it doesn’t matter if you don’t live in the place your parents were born. We need to appreciate more the story our grandparents tell us. I wish we could know more about the life of our ancestors. Also “The Man Who Planted Trees” was very emotional for me.  The beginning of the story was very confusing, I didn’t understand the point of the story until I finished it. I understood that the man planted trees because that was his whole goal. This took a lot of years to be accomplished but he was happy because that was his wish. I learned that it doesn’t matter, what you’re doing if it makes you happy, like my dad says, he says he doesn’t see his work as a job he just sees it as a hobby because he’s doing what he loves. when I grow up I want to find something to do that makes me happy and makes me feel complete and satisfied when I’m doing it, and that’s when I can enjoy my life completely. It’s not that I’m not enjoying my life at all but I feel that I still need to find something that makes me feel my best.

Some essays make you feel a lot of emotions, but there are some that tell stories to explain what the essay is about a good example of one of those is “A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?”. They used the storytelling in a good way because they use stories about how some women were friends with men and they said they couldn’t be friends without having feelings for each other. This, in my opinion, is wrong because friendships are not about gender, everyone should have a relationship with whoever they want to and that shouldn’t be a problem to end a friendship. Another essay I read that had a lot of examples to show its ideas was “The Terrible Teens”. This essay used some examples to show how teens think and how they don’t reason all the desitions they make, like how teenagers drink alcohol “to look cool” and to be part of a group, these desitions can lead to a bigger health problem because they don’t measure the amounts they make.

Covid Jail

Everything started on Sunday when I started feeling a sore throat, and I just thought it was a throat infection, but on Monday we didn’t have classes and I felt worse. I went with the dorm parents and they put me in isolation. when the nurse came on Thursday, she did a covid test and I was positive so I stayed until Friday and she made me another test and I was positive again so I needed to stay more time. I missed the first ski trip and Fernanda’s birthday. But on Monday they let me out.

I enjoyed the beginning of the isolation because I slept a lot and watched a lot of Netflix, but in the last few days, I was stressed because I didn’t couldn’t see the sun because I was on the first floor so I couldn’t open the curtains because everyone could see me through the windows. but now I’m free and very happy.

Down the Mine

This essay made me realize that I need to appreciate more the things I have and be thankful for everything because a lot of people go through a lot to get a lot of essential things. like the one in the essay who went through a lot, he showed commitment, and he came out of his comfort zone to show how difficult the lives of the miners were. I think a lot of people I know should read things like this because they don’t see other realities than what the ones they live, it’s like they live in their own bubbles, sometimes they don’t even see the effort their parents make at their jobs, not because they have money mean that they don’t work hard every day. In conclusion, everyone should be thankful for what they have, and never complain because there’s always going to be someone better and worst than you.

The Man Who Planted Trees

When I started reading this, I was kind of confused with the story I didn’t understand the point of the story until I finished it.

Searching For Home

Searching for Home. By Peta Rush

When I started reading, I thought it was going to be an essay about Chinese culture. but I noticed it wasn’t, the writer wrote the stories she knew about her grandparents, and parents. She wrote that she wanted to find her laojia, unfortunately, her grandparents died when she was little and her mother when she was 7, her dad was from England and they moved to England when she was little.

I think it’s really important to know the past of your family because it’s where you came from, it doesn’t matter if you don’t live in the place your parents were born. We need to appreciate more the story our grandparents tell us. I wish we could know more about the life of our ancestors. I think it’s very interesting how they used to live and to know how the society was in those days.

A man. A woman. Just friends?

In the essay, I read from William Deresiewicz called “A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?. The essay left me a lot to think about and reflect on this society we live in. The essay talks about the friendship of a man and a woman and how it had changed over the years.

As a woman I don’t see a problem with being friends with a man, I don’t know who men think about this, but I least I think its normal to have a lot of friends it doesn’t matter what gender they are when we all were younger we didn’t saw each other as a love interest until we grew up we started to have feelings to have a relationship.

In my own experience, I’ve never had confused feelings with my friends and that’s okay if you like them it’s not a problem, you can just talk about it, if you both feel the same way and if not that’s not a reason to a friendship. On the other way some men when they start to have feelings for a friend usually run away so they don’t have to deal with the problem because they think it’s going to end their friendship which is not.

Sexism everywhere

I think in Mexico is very common the sexism every day everywhere, when I read this essay it didn’t feel like I was learning something new, in my opinion, what she says is true in every word when women are young, society teaches us how to be “feminine” and to have manners, to be skinny, to wear makeup, just so men like us and to have the probation of more people. All the stories about the little girls having eating disorders it’s a thing that it’s not supposed to be common but unfortunately, it is, the problem is not just in girls its also in boys, the society also teaches them that they need to be masculine and strong.

Also, I loved the idea of her website, which can help more people to realize how big is this problem, and some people need to know that this problem exists, not because they haven’t lived it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I think every woman at least one time in their life they’ll be harassed or they’re going to be told something in the street or just a comment, that’ll make them feel uncomfortable.

I think the solution is in every house the parents need to teach their children how to treat others well like if a mom teaches her young boy to respect her girl friends, the girls are not going to grow with fear of men, because that had happened, girls, that lived a trauma at a young age they grow with fear. On the other way, young girls should be reached that they don’t need to be skinny to be pretty. Society needs to change something because this problem it is only getting worse, and if no one does anything it is not going to be solved.

Our town act 3

In my opinion, the first two acts I saw where kind off boring and the story was like every other love story, but in third act you can see a different perspective and the whole story changes, the second act finishes at the wedding and the third starts in emilys funeral, she died because she had problems with her second baby, the doesn’t mention if the baby survived. Emily appears and all the people that are in the graves are represented sitting in chairs and she got excited watching them all there, after that the stage manager talks with emily and she asks him to go back to see her 12 birthday, but after she sees her mother she starts feeling sad and anxious, because she didn’t remember how her mother was when she was younger, she was crying and couldn’t stay more time watching those memories. I think this part is really important in the story because it gives you the message to appreciate the present when you’re living it and enjoy all the moments in your life even all the little things that happen to you, because you don’t know when its going to be your last day living this life.

Our town l and ll

What I liked about the play is that the actors are really good at acting their character, when you watch them you can see how are their personality, also is like if you could see what they’re thinking. I like that there’s a stage manager that explains what’s going on and who the characters are.

The thing I didn’t like about the play is that they don’t use any materials so you need to be really careful to see their hand movement so you can know if they’re cooking or eating, it is not hard to guess but its tiring, you just need to use your imagination a lot. In the beginning, there’s nothing interesting going on, the stage manager says some things that confuse you a little bit like they’re showing you a kid and they said he died some years later, things like that, you’re watching the story but they tell you the future.

My Favorite Things To Do

When I was little I used to practice a lot of sports like soccer, volleyball, swimming, tae-kwon-do, jazz, CrossFit, and a lot more. When I was 14 years old, I started practicing tennis and it became my favorite sport since then I practiced every day from Monday to Thursday and sometimes Saturdays, my coach is super nice and we are really good friends. since I came to Canada I haven’t practiced tennis because my racquet didn’t fit in my suitcase and here it’s too cold to play.

I really like to watch movies and series, my favorite tv show is called “American horror story”. I also love taking naps in the afternoon, in my free time I like drawing and painting that helps me to relax when I’m stressed. I like spending time with my friends and going out with them, any plan with my friends is fun, from staying in my house watching movies to even going out to get dinner or a party.

Chapter 1 They both die at the end

In the book, they both die at the end written by Adam Silvera, in the first chapter we can see Mateo Torrez who is an 18-year-old boy that knows he is going to die in the next 24 hours, there’s a company called death cast that informs you when you’re going to die and he just received the news, he thinks of everyone who’s close with him, his dad is in the hospital,  his mother died when she gave birth to him and he also thinks of his best friend Lidia, he imagines what she’s going to do or be in the future. He’s about to tell his father he received the call.

It’s 1:00 a.m.

I can’t believe I’m never returning to my bedroom.

I unlock the front door, turn the knob, and pull the door open.

I shake my head and slam the door shut.

I’m not walking out into a world that will kill me before my time. I chose this quote because it made me realize that sometimes we don’t take some seconds to appreciate every moment of our lives we just appreciate them when it’s going to finish or when it already finished, I think we should be thankful and happy for every second that we are able to live because we never when it’s going to be our last day.

Romeo & Juliet

I really liked this movie because I’ve only heard about Romeo and Juliet story and that they both die at the end because they loved each other so much they couldn’t live apart, I enjoyed watching the movie about how their families hated each other to death, it made my feel sad seeing how the nurse and the church father were the only ones that supported their relationship. I’ve never heard the whole story with context. After watching the movie I understood why it was impossible for them to be together. In my own personal opinion, I prefer this kind of love story, the one that has a lot of background and context of why everything is happening.

The only thing I didn’t like at all was that the love they felt for each other happened really fast. they meet one day and the next day they were getting married. Also, another thing I didn’t like at all that was the vocabulary they used was really old, this was making it harder to understand the movie. I think it was kind of exaggerated how they acted,  but I think that’s who it was supposed to be.

México and Canadá

I’m from Mexico and I love that the culture is rich, colorful, and vibrant and that our traditions are passed down from generation to generation. The food is delicious, the music is uplifting, and most people live life to the fullest. When I came here I was really nervous because I thought Canada was going to be very different from Mexico. I was worried that I would suffer the change a lot but I told myself that I could get over those changes really fast.

The thing I miss the most from home is my family and my pets. I miss a lot of things from my house like how I used to have my own bed in my own room alone, and now that I’m here and I have a roommate. Although, I have now learned to live and share my own space. I also miss my friends from Mexico but I am so happy that I made new friends here. My new friends are close with me because we live in the dorms together, eat all of our meals together and support one another. I also miss the warm weather in Mexico and when you went out of your house you didn’t have to bother to take a sweater or a jacket because is not that cold ever. Now that I am here, I always need to dress warm and wear a jacket and extra clothes. I  have really enjoyed not having to be worried about COVID as much as I used to in Mexico. Here, I feel more freedom and I just have to use my mask and wash my hands and stay safe.

Overall my experience in Canada has been great and I’m looking forward to making new memories.

“Correspondencias entre amar o aborrecer”

Feliciano me adora y le aborrezco;A
Lisardo me aborrece y yo le adoro;B
por quien no me apetece ingrato, lloro,B
y al que me llora tierno no apetezco.A

A quien más me desdora, el alma ofrezco;A
a quien me ofrece víctimas, desdoro;B

Translation:

Feliciano adores me and I abhor him;
Lisardo hates me and I adore him;
for whom I don’t feel like ungrateful, I cry,
and to the one who cries me tender, I don’t feel like it.

To whom I most despair, the soul I offer;
to those who offer me victims, I disdain;
I despise the one who enriches my decorum,
and to the one who makes contempt, I enrich.

If with my offense I reprimand one,
the other one reproaches me offended;
and to suffer anyway I come,

for both torment my sense:
what do you ask for what I don’t have,
and the one with not having what I ask of him.

Talks about loving someone with passion, but that someone doesn’t love you back the way you love him. It says that the other way is being loved but not loving that person.

Carmen Personal Opinion

I liked the movie because it was my first time watching a musical with opera and my first time listening to opera music, I can say that it was interesting, I like to try new things to see if I like them, the story of the movie was kind of interesting because I wanted to see what Carmen was going to do with her life and who she was going to choose.

In my opinion, I didn’t like everything in the movie like the story was repetitive and for me, every song sounded the same but it was because I’m not used to hearing a lot of opera music, and I know it was a musical and they need to sing but they wouldn’t have a lot of dialogues it was just signing and in french so it was harder to understand what was going on. Also, I didn’t like watching how the bullfighter killed the bull. In the story, they didn’t give a lot of context like how carmen ended up with the torero they just showed how he wanted to seduce her, the thing I liked the least was that Carmen died and none of the problems she made were resolved.
