Stargirl a different person

Stargirl is a very strange girl. She has a different personality than everyone else. At every game, she would cheer for every team no matter what. She would also play her ukulele at lunchtime and sing people happy birthday whenever she could. At first, everyone thinks that Stargirl was the coolest thing that ever happened to Micah High, but as time moves on everyone starts to realize Stargirl isn’t a “miracle” anymore. People start to stop wanting to be friends with her, and everyone wants to exclude her. But even though everyone has put down Stargirl she doesn’t get upset and she doesn’t stop her daily routine.

“The earth is speaking to us, but we can’t hear because of all the racket our senses are making. Sometimes we need to erase them, erase our senses.  Then–maybe-the earth will touch us.  The universe will speak.  The stars will whisper.” (p. 91).

Stargirl says this because she thinks that sometimes we think way too much about what makes sense and that we do not focus on what is around us and what is important to us.  She also says this because she is able to understand some things we don’t and she thinks we should become more connected to nature. Also, Stargirl noticed that anything bad that happens to her she does not pity herself. This girl is a Tigger meaning she is always happy looking at the positive.  She never seems sad.

My weekend

On Friday I went to a jumping park with my friends. I was so excited because it was my first time in one of those, but at the end I enjoyed it. On Saturday I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but Fernanda came to my room and she invited me to downtown. At first, we didn’t have a plan, so while we walked downtown we were deciding what to do. First, we went to dinner in nubo, and then we went to throw axes. When we arrive at the axes place I was so scared because it was a new thing for me and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be good at throwing, but it turns out that I´m good at doing it. I enjoy my Saturday too. Finally, on Saturday I decide not to go out, I only walk to London drugs to buy something that I need and then I walk to thrifty foods to buy some strawberries and cheese. In conclusion that was my weekend, I have a really good time and the most important thing was I tried new things.

The biggest fear of growing up

Holden is afraid of growing up, he still looks for attention, he still wants to have problems like the other kids, and therefore he strongly resists growing up. More than anything else, Holden fears adulthood: sex, old age, and death.

“What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff…That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be” (p.173).

As we can see Holden tries too hard to preserve childhood innocence. What he doesn’t understand is that part of growing up is losing that innocence, and that he’s the one headed for the fall, and that there’s nobody there to catch him.

Famous Poems (Personal opinion)

The poem that I like the most was “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, because the author make us think about choices in life, whether to go with the everyone or go alone. Life is a journey, and this poem talks about those times in life when a important decision has to be made. The main message of this poem is that life is full of choices which will define our future.

My least favorite poem was “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, because I don’t really understand the meaning. But I guess it’s about the importance of keeping the promises he made before he died.

My after school activity

Today I’m going to talk about my after-school activity. This Monday I have paddleboard and I like that activity because I’m in the water, with nature and for me, that is a very relaxing thing. It was very windy, so for me, it’s harder because you need to row more hard to keep moving forward. One thing that I don’t like about paddle it’s that you need to row on one side and then on the other to go straight, instead of just row to one side and go straight.

Another reason why I like that activity is that we can play music while we are on the boards. So, in the end, we can enjoy being in the water with the wind, rowing, and listening to music and nature. That is something very relaxing.

The Catcher In The Rye

In the book The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger. Holden decides to walk from Central Park to the Museum of Natural History. The museum presents him with a vision of life he can understand: it is frozen, silent, and always the same. Holden can think about and judge the Eskimo in the display case, but the Eskimo will never judge him back. It troubles him that he has changed each time he returns, while the museum’s displays remain completely the same. They represent the simple, idealistic, manageable vision of life that Holden wishes he could live.

The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you. p.135

In my opinion, Holden is a boy who constantly describes himself as crazy and depressed, but to me, Holden is a sensitive boy in a state of depression. Holden has been through two traumas that had a huge impact on his life and his mental health. Those reasons influence his behavior, but in my opinion, it shouldn’t be like that.

My Week

Today I am going to talk about how my week is going so far. First, it all started on Monday, my first class was geography. In geography, I finished an assignment for a presentation that I was doing. My second class was literature in which we reviewed the work that had been left for homework and we also read some poems, in the end, I liked the class. Then I have biology, and I work so hard to finish all my assignments well done and in time. After school I have my ASA which was paddle boarding, it was my first time doing that activity and I loved it.

On Tuesday I have more difficult classes so I have to work harder at school, but I am proud because today I worked very well and finished my work on time. I don’t have ASA this afternoon so that gives me time to finish what I have to do and be ready for tomorrow.

Family Trip

In this work, I am going to talk about my family trip for a week.
It all started this Friday when I took my flight to Toronto to see my parents, my brother, and my sister. I was very happy because I hadn’t seen them for 4 months and I already missed them so much so I was very happy to see them all. I first arrived in Toronto on Saturday at 2 in the morning but my parents arrived at 6 so I was at the airport for 4 hours waiting for them and that was very tiring for me. After being all together finally, we went to our hotel to get ready but it was too early so they didn’t have our room ready so we decided to go out and see the city, we had breakfast, we went shopping and we walked around the city. When it was time we decided to go back to our hotel because our room was ready and also to be able to rest a bit, we slept, took a bath and went out to dinner in a nice place and we also walked to see the city at night which looked very nice. That was our first day which was a bit heavy. On our second day, we got up early and went to Niagara to see the falls, we got on a helicopter to see them better but I didn’t like it because the view was not as good as the view below. After the third day, we went to Ottawa and it was too cold so I didn’t do much and spent more time in the hotel. The next day I went to Quebec which was one of my favorite places because it was like a small Europe but in Canada and it had many places and things to do which I thought was a good thing and I enjoyed being there. Our last days were spent in Montreal. Montreal is a bigger city, they have an underground city, and it is one of the most important cities in Canada, which is something that caught my attention. I also had the opportunity to ski and I had a lot of fun because my brother and sister had never skied before so I had to teach them and it was a lot of fun.

My favorite part of the trip is that I was able to spend time with my family and enjoy them to the fullest, which was something that I missed doing and enjoyed doing it.

And it helps me not to be moody

Photography class is one of my favorites

Because in that class I really like that Mr. Wood takes us out for a drive

And takes us to know more places

So we can appreciate the beautiful landscape in which we live

There´s a thing that I don´t like about the school

So I have to get used to it and not give it much care

My dorm is my safe place

Because it’s like my home away from home

So I try that always keep my dorm clean and with neutral colors

I like to be there calling with my family so I can´t  feel alone

My improving during this time

My writing in this time that I have been here had been improving. Before I was used to using commas in all texts all the time. Something that I like and that at the end makes me learn is that my teacher always corrects me and teaches me how I can write better. My most common error is the run-on sentences so I started to understand that I don’t have to put commas all the time and if I put them I have to know where to put them correctly. I learned that it’s better to write small sentences and put periods in them. That way the text will be clear and easier to read. One thing that helps me to improve that mistake is reading books and writing about them. The more texts I write more I learn.

¨ Enough Is Enough¨. This essay t left me thinking a lot about what we women go through in our lives. Laura’s idea of creating a blog where all brave women can tell their stories of what has happened to them, without having any fear of being attacked by anyone or seen in a bad way. That seemed like a great idea to me because it allows us all to be able to read the testimonies of women from all over the world, which creates an impact and can help people become stronger and realize that what they are going through is not the right thing to do and that they have to learn to speak and defend themselves so that in the end the goal of all this is to be able to inspire women and bring about real change in society. Also ¨Down the mine¨. Made me think a lot about how there are people who sacrifice themselves every day in order to survive. Something that caught my attention is how Orwell decided to leave his comfort zone to begin to understand the conditions of how these people lived and be able to help them more easily. At the end of the story, I realized that I live in a very different world from those people and it makes me more grateful for what I have.

My favorite essay this semester is ¨Searching for home¨. I liked this essay a lot because it tells us the story of a boy who was very confused about where his home was when at the end of the story he realized that his home was always with him. In this story, I learned that home is something far beyond something material. Home is where a person feels safe and accepted. A home tells a story. The most important thing I learned is that home is created by us and creating a home requires an emotional connection and a sense of belonging, not physical things. Another essay that we read and that touched my feelings is ¨the man who planted trees¨. It is about a man who loves to help the world so one of his purposes is to make them have a better place to live. The Lord not only thinks of people but also thinks of the environment. He believes that there are not enough trees in the world, so he does one of the things he loves most in life, which is plant trees and help.

“A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?”. This essay is about the relationships between a man and a woman. The question in this essay is whether two people of the opposite sex can be just friends. In my opinion, it can only be done if the two do everything possible to achieve it without mixing any type of feeling between them, treating each other only as friends. Also “The Terrible Teens”. Is a story that tells us that adolescents do have not very good behavior, but in the end, it is something normal because they are in their growth stage. It also explains that the brain of adolescents is totally different from adults. At the end of this story, an interesting fact that I learned is that the main cause of death in teenagers is accidents, and they are very likely to die.

My quarentine

It all started Wednesday morning. I woke up and felt fine but during the day I start to feel bad and I was very tired. After school, I decided to go to the nurse and tell her how I felt. The nurse for precaution decided to test me for COVID and it came out positive. After she explained everything to me, she assigned me a quarantine room. My quarantine room was next to my normal room so I didn’t have much trouble getting settled to spend the 5 days there. The symptoms only lasted a day, so I was fine. In quarantine, I had a good time because I rested a lot. The only thing I didn’t like was that I got COVID just days before the ski trip and I really want to go on the trip. The good thing is that I still have the opportunity to go two more times. In the end, I’m happy because I’m out of quarantine and I can spend time with my friends.

Down the Mine

In this essay, George Orwell describes his experience of going down an English coal mine to see the conditions of coal miners in 1930.

George Orwell is an excellent example of a person who put himself in a state of discomfort and stepped out of his comfort zone to experience firsthand what other people are like and how other people live. To better understand the working conditions of people in the North West of England. Orwell went to live as if he were one of them. His journey through the mines demonstrates his commitment to documenting as accurately as possible the hard life of the miners in a coal mine.

The Man Who Planted Trees

This essay talks about a man who was happy planting trees his whole life. He have an incredible capacity of turning a place into a forest by himself. And also it was his idea. He wants to help everyone to have a better place to live. He thinks that there are not enough trees in the world. And the thing that he most loves to do is plant trees.

This essay caught my attention because at the end the lecture give us a message. He teaches us that we can be happy alone if we do what we most love to do. We need to learn to be happy and to appreciate the thing that is around us. Also, he teaches us to always try to help people and be a better person.

Searching for Home

When we are kids we learn that home is the place where we have lived all our lives. In the first part of the reading, we can see how the kid has confusion in his head because he does not know where is his home. His father is English and his mother, although born and brought up in Singapore, was ethnically Chinese. That makes it “mixed blood” (hunxue’er). He also is constantly moving with his family from one place to another. So he won’t have a place to call home and he wants to have it. The only place he felt that he belonged was in the village where his grandparents were born. One of the reasons that made this kid move to china, is to find and discover his own laojia. China is an important place for him because his family has a history there. He wants to learn more about the Chinese side. That makes him feel that he is finding finally his laojia.

In my opinion, home is more than a place where we live. A home is a place where we feel comfortable, secure, happy. Is a place to look forward to opportunely live in every day. A place to live with our families and enjoy with friends. Is a place to built memories as well as a way to build feature wealth. A place where we can truly just be ourselves. Home is the base where everything begins. The most important thing is that we built that home.

A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?

My opinion on this essay is that sometimes it may be true that best friends can fall in love, but if they do their best to maintain the friendship without involving feelings it may be possible that they are just friends.

In many cases when you have a best friend you can begin to have feelings towards him because you begin to care a lot about how he is, if he is well, you begin to see how much you love him, etc. It may be that we begin to confuse those feelings with feelings of more than a friend, but in reality, it is not.

In movies we are used to being shown two best friends who begin to have feelings for each other, have sex, one of them falls in love, and in the end, the friendship is destroyed. This type of story that we see in the film does not seem correct to me because it teaches us that there cannot be a relationship between a man and a woman as friends, when in fact it can.

The reality of women

In the article by Laura Bates, we can see more clearly the things that women go through and that sometimes we do not realize because we are already used to it, or because we were educated in a way that we see as normal, but in reality is quite the opposite and that is not right. The article wasn´t something new that I haven’t heard.

In my opinion from what I read in the article is that everything they said that women went through since they were little is true. When you are a woman from a young age, one day they teach you that you must always be pretty to men and that implies that you must be skinny or you need to dress and act in a certain way, you had to be feminine, etc. But in reality, the only thing that should matter to us is learning from a very young age to love ourselves as we are, to do what we want to make us happy, and to put aside the stereotypes that have been created for us.

Laura’s idea of creating a blog where all brave women can tell their stories of what has happened to them, without having any fear of being attacked by anyone or seen in a bad way, seemed like a great idea to me because it allows us all to be able to read the testimonies of women from all over the world, which creates an impact and can help people become stronger and realize that what they are going through is not the right thing to do and that they have to learn to speak and defend themselves so that in the end the goal of all this is to be able to inspire women and bring about real change in society.

Our Town (Act 3)

Act three surprised me too much because something happened that I did not expect to happen, I expected them to have children and live happily ever after like most stories but in reality, something totally different happened. Emily died because she had problems having her second child, something that left me questioning is that I don’t know if the second child survived or not, I guess I have to watch act three again to resolve my doubt. George was left alone with his children, which seemed kind of sad to me because he was no longer with his wife. It caught my attention that Emily wanted to go back to the past and be with her family again, but that is no longer possible, and she continued without understanding, so the narrator allowed her to see her family one more day, but she had to choose the day, so she chose the day she turned 12, and she went back to see her family but in the end, she realized that that was a mistake because she was trying to explain to them that she was already dead and she wanted to say goodbye to them, but they didn’t understand and went on with their lives, so Emily felt very sad. Something that this work can leave us learning is that in reality we do not appreciate all the time we spend with our family until we die and we begin to realize everything that we missed, it also teaches us that nothing is forever.

Our Town

In my opinion, what I liked about the film is that it is kind of romantic. In the first chapter they start to introduce most of the characters, the narrator seemed very important to me because he helped us to have an update on what was happening in the play, another thing that caught my attention was how they could form several places in just one scenario and the creativity they had to simulate that everything was real.

The movie didn’t seem like a very interesting movie to me, it showed us the future and the present at the same time and that made us lose in the movie and sometimes not know what was happening. I don’t know what to say about the book because I’m not used to reading these types of books and it was difficult for me to try to understand what was going on just by reading the dialogues.

My favorite thing

When I have free time my favorite thing to do is cook but I only like desserts. One of the things I like the most is to decorate the cake. Because you can express yourself and it brings out our creativity and our talent when making things since there are a lot of ways to decorate them, however, we want and it doesn’t always have to be perfect.

I feel that cooking or baking desserts are a way to release stress because we focus too much on the measurements of things, on the recipe and it is also a way to spend time with your family and at the end of the day, you enjoy a delicious dessert made by you ready to share. Also, I think that cooking improves your relationship with other people and is always in the most important moments of your life.

Me before you

In the book me before you, by Jojo Moyes, Williams begins to see that Clark is enthusiastic, talkative, naive, and cheerful. She has never been out of town, and she doesn’t like to take risks either. The only thing she cares about is looking for work to support her family, but William wants to show Clark that there is a world outside to know.

“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible” (p. 2).

This quote motivates us to live life boldly and live it to the fullest, to take risks, to always do the things we want, to learn to do new things, and also always be grateful to be healthy and complete.

Romeo and Juliet

I liked the movie because it is a very beautiful story in which we can see all kinds of emotions such as the hate of families, comedy, love, and the unbridled passion between Romeo and Juliet, I also liked it because in the movie we can see real love. A beautiful love but we could also see a love in which Romeo and Juliet tried to do everything to see each other and to try to be together without caring about the rest, which was something that caught my attention; I also liked it because it shows us how true love is stronger no matter what happens or the adversities that arise or those who want to separate them. The one who struggles to achieve happiness is what unites them in the end and that is something that was very beautiful to me.

What I did not like so much about the movie is everything that Romeo and Juliet had to go through to be able to be together and that in the end, everything is in vain because they did not make themselves happy as they wanted and they died, something that caught my attention is that it is an original story because in the other stories it always ends with a happy ending and in this case, it had a sad ending.

Personal Writting

One of my favorite things to do is travel. Because you live new and different adventures every day and it also helps you escape from your daily life; because you know new places, new people, you can learn new things that you did not know existed and it helps you to complement your knowledge. For me traveling is much more than tourism; it is a constant learning exercise that takes us away from our routine; puts us to the test and allows us to know ourselves better. That is one of the reasons since I was little I was very interested in living in another place different from mine and having a new experience that helps me learn new things. That is why I am here in Canada; in the time that I have been here I have liked it a lot because I met new people who are now my friends which each one has taught me something new that has expanded my mind more; I have learned to know how to take care of myself and be more independent. I have also learned to value more the things that I have; to be more grateful to my parents for allowing me to live this beautiful experience that I am living; and that I know it will serve me for life.

Meaning of the poem:

As the title itself indicates, the poem presents us with a definition of love that focuses on the contradictory behaviors and emotions that this feeling produces.

What I liked the most about Carmen is that its’ simply vibrant from start to finish. The scenery is magnificent and it’s loaded with wonderful details, I also liked the story of the movie and it caught my attention that for Carmen it was very important to be free, to be a gypsy.

What I did not like about the film is that Carmen was a French film so I did not understand the songs and also because it is opera and I am not used to listening to those kinds of films. I did not like that Carmen did not take things seriously and always wanted to run away from all sides and without caring about anything, I did not like the ending either because I did not understand it very well and they killed Carmen.

“It is the time you have wasted on your rose that makes your rose so important.”

In The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, impatiently awaits the promise of the fox, that secret that this animal, his friend, would have to share with him before leaving, but unexpectedly and skillfully he takes the time to go to the garden to see the flowers.

And he returned with the fox.

“Bye,” he said.

“Bye,” said the fox. Here’s my secret, which couldn’t be easier: only with the heart does it look good; The essential is invisible to the eyes.

“The essential is invisible to the eye,” repeated the little prince to remember.

“It is the time you have wasted on your rose that makes your rose so important.”

“It is the time I have wasted with her …” repeated the little prince to remember it.

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox, “but you must not forget it.” You are responsible forever for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose …

“I am responsible for my rose …” repeated the little prince to remember him. (p.24)

The rose represents pure and disinterested love, that love that is above one’s own interests. For the Little Prince, the rose is unique because it is HIS rose. She knows there are many other roses, but this is the one she dedicates her life to. This phrase leaves us a lesson that sometimes we spend so much time on things that are not important and we leave out what is really important.
