PW #6: Peak of Winter

When the sun’s out, the stoke is up. This has been the narrative up in the mountains for the last couple weeks, actually. After a grim 3 weeks up on Mount Washington with absolutely no snowfall, we are finally back! Last Friday finally delivered 13cm of fresh powder, and the cold front over the island right now made the snow even better. Last weekend was a cooler one, but definitely an amazing one too. It still blows my mind that I’ve been skiing Mount Washington for over three years, and I still keep finding new spots. The terrain up on the mountain here really is amazing if you know where to find it. The ski trip, well, wasn’t the greatest. I would call that day sheer ice. The part of the mountain that actually has the nice terrain was closed off, mainly due to a lack of snowfall when the trip was happening. What you see from the lodge actually isn’t everything on the mountain, in fact, if you go around the peak and down a bit onto a smaller ridge, you can enter the whole backside of the mountain! Here you can find a large bowl which is accessible by a small-ish chute that usually isn’t very skied, and a whole ridge on the other side that is only accessible through a short boot-pack. Funnily enough, even a short book-pack is enough to deter people away from the top part of the ridge. Saturday and Sunday provided some of the best skiing that I’ve had all season, with untouched snow, steeper technical terrain, and almost no people, even on the height of a Saturday. Last night even delivered an extra 34cm of powder on top of the first 13! I can’t wait to get up again this weekend to take advantage of the amazing snow and untouched terrain.
