IRJE#07 – The Art of Thinking Clearly

The book The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli is about recognizing and avoiding the common cognitive biases that cloud our judgment and decision-making. It helps you understand how often we make irrational choices without even realizing it, and how these mental traps influence our everyday lives. One of the key takeaways from this book is learning how to make clearer, smarter decisions by recognizing when your brain is tricking you. For example, the author explains the sunk cost fallacy, which is when you continue investing time, money, or energy into something just because you’ve already put so much into it — even when it’s no longer beneficial. This lesson really made me reflect on how often people stay in toxic friendships, bad jobs, or unhealthy habits simply because they’ve already “invested too much.”

One of my favorite quotes from the book is:

“If 50 million people say something foolish, it is still foolish.” (Pg. 31)

This quote stood out to me because it highlights how easily people follow the crowd, assuming that if so many people believe something, it must be true. It made me think about how often people conform to popular opinions without questioning them, simply because they don’t want to stand out or be wrong. But the truth is, just because something is widely believed doesn’t make it right. This concept connects to real life when people blindly follow trends, opinions, or social norms without considering if it aligns with their own logic or values.

This book really opened my eyes to how easily we fall into mental traps and how important it is to think critically. It made me realize that being aware of these cognitive biases is the first step to making smarter, more rational decisions.
