PW#8 LaLaLand

LaLaLand is a musical love story that shows two main characters, Mia and Sebastian. As you are in the edge of your seat, waiting for the typical romance finale, it ends up with a conclusion that not many might have expected. The ending takes things in an unexpected direction for a romance musical as its two lead characters don’t end up together. This does not really match many of the typical expectations the audience has.

Sebastian and Mia achieve their dreams — he opens his jazz club and she becomes a famous actress — but at the cost of their relationship. The final moments bring them back together, both in reality and in a dream sequence, but it is a fleeting reunion before they both come to the shared understanding that their time together has passed.

We can also clearly see this by the color theory of the movie. In the scenes where Mia and Sebastian are together, the color scheme is generally blue and purple. Even when it’s not full, there are always details and elements. This could be like Mias dresses, trash cans, cars, the backdrop, etc. This directly resembles the intensity of the emotions in that given moment. This connects to the ending scenes because our minds subconsciously affects us, as the colors are blue and purple.

This heartbreaking love, ultimately does not end like you are expecting, but it helped me understand something. It’s the people that push you and inspire you to follow your dreams that make the difference. It’s not about the right person wrong time, it’s about how you were meant to meet. So yes, ultimately love found them, but it was because of each other that they pushed each other to reach their highest potential and purpose in this life. So, it made me realize that you don’t need a perfect happy ending to know when the story is finished.
