English 6 B Advanced: Course Information

Overview
The goal of English 6 B Advanced Level 2 is to prepare students to move into Language A English classes.

English classes at SSIS are taught at five levels beginning with B Foundation (for students with little or no English fluency) to B, B Advanced Level 1, B Advanced Level 2, and A (for native speakers and others with full fluency).

The Course
The course will focus on skills development in the four traditional areas of language arts—speaking, writing, listening, and reading—and will attempt as much as possible to follow the literary studies undertaken in Language A English 6, sometimes in abbreviated or modified form. We will also work on goal-setting and building positive habits that will lead to success in school.

Materials Needed

  • 2 — A4 exercise books
  • 1 — A5 exercise book
  • Homework Diary

All of these will be supplied by the school.

Assessment
Work done by students in English 6 B Advanced is assessed using a modified version of the IB Middle Years Programme assessment criteria. There are six criteria, A to F, covering Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading.

Homework
The only homework for English 6 B Advanced is Independent Reading.

Students must

  • read every day (including weekends) for at least 15 minutes
  • complete a 2-page entry in their A5 Independent Reading Journals for each book they read
  • bring their Independent Reading book to school every day

Students will also be given time in class to read, and to write their Journal entries.

All other work for the course will be done during school time. A student who falls behind because of ill health or any other reason may need to work at home to catch up.
