I always it is very interesting to hear stories that actually happened from actual people. The truth is that i would probably never read a book like ‘Socialism is great’ if it wasn’t for the author herself visiting and telling her story. It’s very easy, I think, to fall into thinking that all these books about China are pretty much a history lesson with a main character and not much real story behind it and that what made it not very attractive for me to read. Zhang Lijia was so extremely open about her childhood and the difficuly times she had throughout her life. Many people would probably have much more difficulty telling other people that they don’t know very well, their personal and emotional story, but Zhang Lijia I must say made me VERY interested in her story and made me want to read the rest of the story at once. Obviouslt, Zhang Lijia had a very difficult time growing up, dreaming big but then being ‘shot down’. I think that Zhang Lijia’s story really proves that if you really love doing something and you are so very passionate about it, then really anything is possible and there is nothing that can get in your way of doing it, just like she became a writer even though doubted by other people. For me, it was a very inspiring story to hear and it seems as if the book is more cheerful rather than depressing so I’m really looking forward to reading it!
