History of English

The sheet we read through recently on the history of English was fairly interesting. However I find it mildly insulting that it referred to english as a mongrel or a cross-breed. I personally think that is a definition of American english as they spell half the words wrong. But that is not the point.

I find it interesting how Gaelic, Scots and Welsh had no part but they where the languages spoken in Britain at the time. Also if English come from old German and old French where is the german relation. Non of the words relate to German.

    Hi Max,

If you look at the left-hand column in the table on your handout, all of those English words come from German. For example, the English word ‘house’ comes from the German word ‘haus’. There are lots of them! :)
